It was the will of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 1st - Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland that her cousin (albeit with a somewhat stronger claim to a throne) be a ‘guest’ in some of the most beautiful country houses in the country and no more so than Derbyshire - my home, my playground and my pleasure to welcome you as Queen for a weekend - visiting all the places that we know Mary stayed here. We stay at The Old Hall Hotel right in the centre of Buxton, a Roman established town. The Old Hall Hotel built in 1510 and originally called the New Hall Hotel was one of the places that Mary stayed as a guest, often accompanied by the Duchess of Devonshire who lived at Chatsworth House and whose husband was ordered to accompany Mary. In one of the rooms is a tiny window in which Mary scratched a quote. It is thought she haunts the corridors at night …. We visit Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall (more glass than wall), Wingfield Manor) and Tutbury Castle over the weekend stay. Buxton theatre is a lively event option if you are wanting extra curricular options. This is a twin shared experience (single or double room options may be available on request at a supplement cost) - with full breakfast each day. A full schedule with historic talks at each house/castle visited. A tour T short !! £350 for this weekend luxuriating in our Derbyshire country houses interlaced with afternoon teas and evening cocktails, and possibly a theatre visit !! £175 deposit required please to secure booking. Thankyou x
