Details

First built in 1901 by William Coutts and originally named the Lyceum, the Alexandra Theatre has a rich history on Birmingham's cultural stage. Affectionately known as 'the Alex' by locals, this grand Edwardian venue underwent an extensive £650,000 refurbishment in 2018, restoring it to its former glory with a plush, royal blue interior and a seating capacity of 1,347. Though it initially struggled to attract audiences, it soon became a beloved home for melodramas, variety shows, and pantomimes. The theatre even boasts a few resident ghosts, including that of former owner Leon Salberg, who died in his office in 1938. Today, its stage hosts a vibrant mix of touring West End musicals, compelling drama, laugh-out-loud stand-up comedy, family favourites, opera, and live music, ensuring its legacy as a key entertainment hub continues.

Located on Suffolk Street Queensway, The Alexandra offers visitors a state-of-the-art experience while retaining its significant historical charm. The theatre’s modern amenities include cutting-edge sound and lighting systems, and it is fully equipped for all guests, with accessible facilities including an induction loop, headsets, and wheelchair spaces. Conveniently situated just a two-minute walk from Birmingham New Street Station, it's also close to the Bullring and Mailbox shopping centres for pre-show dining or shopping. Upcoming highlights include the breathtaking puppetry of "War Horse," the show-stopping musical "The Bodyguard," the supernatural thriller "2:22 A Ghost Story," and the family-friendly "Bluey's Big Play". Whether you're a seasoned theatre-goer or a first-time visitor, The Alexandra promises a memorable night out.
