A mere ten miles south-west of Birmingham, the 524 acres of Lickey Hills Country Park offer an immediate escape into a varied landscape of woodlands, heathland, and grassland. Dominating the skyline is Beacon Hill, rising 297 metres (975 feet), from which, on a clear day, visitors can gaze across parts of 13 different counties, with a toposcope available to help identify distant landmarks. Multiple marked walking trails cater to all abilities, ranging from a gentle 1.5-mile circular walk starting at the visitor centre to more challenging 5.6-mile routes. These paths wind through ancient woodlands, by tranquil ponds, and across the notable Bilberry Hill, aptly named for the abundant fruit that ripens in late summer.
Beyond the panoramic views and invigorating walks, Lickey Hills is a haven for biodiversity, boasting over 380 species of flowering plants, 17 types of fern, and an impressive 350 varieties of fungi. The park's diverse habitats support a wide array of wildlife; keep an eye out for common lizards basking on rocks, various bird species including woodpeckers and nuthatches, and even deer. Families will appreciate the children's adventure playground and the free table-tennis table near the visitor centre. Adding an artistic touch to your exploration, several sculptures are dotted throughout the park, including pieces like "Icarus" and "Spirit of the Woods," remnants of a trail that began in the early 1990s. The visitor centre provides maps and further information to help you make the most of your day in this significant green space.
