Within the chic, minimalist interior of Restaurant Folium on Caroline Street, a pared-back and comfortable style sets the stage for ambitious culinary creations. Here, chef Ben Tesh, a Noma alumnus, works solo in the open kitchen, presenting an ingredients-led vision of modern British cuisine. Expect meticulously prepared dishes, often subtle yet frequently original, forming part of an ever-changing tasting menu available in short or long versions. This Jewellery Quarter gem, run by Tesh and his partner Lucy Hanlon who manages the front of house with great charm, has quickly established itself in Birmingham's thriving restaurant scene since opening in 2017.
The dining experience at Folium is a quiet, relaxing, and informal affair, where the focus remains firmly on the exceptional food and carefully selected wine pairings. Dishes showcase high-quality, seasonal ingredients sourced from small-scale farmers and sustainable fisheries, with a notable emphasis on seafood. Patrons praise the exquisite flavours and textures, from A5 wagyu sirloin with grilled endive to Cornish turbot with a foamy ponzu sauce or an Arbroath smokie liquor. This commitment to excellence has earned Folium 3 AA Rosettes and recognition as Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year at the Midlands Food Drink & Hospitality Awards.
